Claims Procedure
The method of making a claim differs per insurance type. Please select your required product:
Private Car
Whilst we hope that you never have a need to make a claim on your car insurance, accidents happen!
All the Insurers we deal with operate a 24 hour Claim Reporting line, but we have arranged our own
24-hour One-Call service for full Accident Management and Uninsured Loss Recovery with OnClaims.
So no matter who your insurers are and whether you have suffered;
- A road traffic accident
- Theft of or from your vehicle
- Vandalism
- Fire
Call OnClaims on 03302 020653
OnClaims will record all the claim details and send us a copy by email, so we have all details should we
need to get involved.
OnClaims will then advise you the best way of dealing with the claim and;
- Notify your Insurance Company
- Arrange for recovery of your vehicle if it is not driveable
- Arrange for the repairs to be carried out by an approved repairer
- Arrange a courtesy vehicle whilst your own vehicle is in for repairs (hire car charges may apply)
- Recover your uninsured losses including the cost of repairs to your vehicle (if you do not have comprehensive cover), vehicle recovery charges, the policy excess, loss of earnings, hire car charges, personal injuries etc.

Accidents (whether fault or non-fault)
Whilst your Insurers have a 24 hour claims line we recommend that you contact our own helpline
through OnClaims. Experience has told us that most repairs to motor caravans
need to be done by a specialist repairer or the original converter. Insurer Approved Repairers are
not always geared up to deal with motor caravans (depending on the make/model/conversion).
It is often the case that the policyholder will obtain an estimate from a garage of his/her choice
before repairs can be carried out. The reasonable cost of transporting your motor caravan to/from a
garage for such purposes is covered by the policy. For this reason we cannot guarantee that you
receive a courtesy car whilst your motor caravan is being repaired (see below). An Insurer assessor
will need to inspect the motor caravan and agree the estimate with the garage before work can
be started.
Courtesy Cars
Whilst your insurers operate an Approved Repairer scheme where you are guaranteed to get a courtesy
car without charge for the duration of your repair we recommend that you a call OnClaims on 03302 020653.
However you are NOT guaranteed a courtesy car using this method.
Please consider the following;
Motor Caravans are not the same as private cars! Your Insurers operate 24-hour MOTOR claim reporting
telephone line and will send you to one of their recommended repairers following damage to your vehicle.
At this point motor caravan claims can go wrong unless you have a small standard vehicle! Using the
latest technology an approved garage is able to calculate the cost of repairs within a few minutes,
tell your insurers and loan you a courtesy car for the duration of the repair. He may not be able to
do the same for your motor caravan. It should be remembered that courtesy cars are supplied by the
approved repairer who has a small fleet of cars to deal with this, and it is important for him/her to
have a swift turnaround of vehicles to make this cost-effective. Quite often your motor caravan will
need to be returned to the original converter, or the approved garage will have to contact the
original converter to obtain estimates for the repair. He will not have a fleet of motor caravans to
loan out and this is why you will not see our adverts guaranteeing a courtesy car following an
accident. After all most motor caravans are second vehicles to the owner anyway, so you will have
alternative transport. * See Uninsured Loss Recover below.
Theft
(a) - Of the vehicle
Probably the most annoying type of claim, from both your point of view and ours! When a motor caravan
gets stolen it is rarely recovered – either because it has been whisked away to Europe or taken apart
to be fitted out on another base vehicle! If you are unlucky enough to have your vehicle stolen you
MUST report it to the Police immediately, obtain a crime reference number and then report it to your
insurers.
Campton recommend that you fit a Thatcham Category 5 approved Tracking Device to your vehicle to
help the Police track down your stolen vehicle. After reporting a theft there is a period when you can
do nothing but wait! Obviously you want your motor caravan back but the Insurers will normally wait
for up to a month before making a total loss offer, to see if the vehicle is recovered. If it is
recovered, any damage caused is dealt with under the theft section of the policy. You will be
without a vehicle during this period – another reason to fit an approved Tracking device,
especially if your motor caravan is your only vehicle.
Important Information regarding Stolen Vehicles;
The easiest way to take a vehicle is to steal the owners’s keys and this is what criminals are
targeting. These criminals are called "sneaker" as they try to sneak into your home to steal the keys.
This is not difficult as many motorists keep them hanging on hooks in their kitchen etc or leave them
by the front door on a table. Professional criminals steal motor caravans, not young joy riders so
owners have to be more vigilant when it comes to crime prevention. Campton recommends that you fit a
Thatcham Category 1 alarm/immobiliser and A Thatcham category 5 Tracking devise to your vehicle.
(b) - Of the Contents
Under the Campton Motor Caravan Scheme you can claim up to £3000 for theft of contents from your motor
caravan. Always store your contents "out of sight". There is a single article limit of £200.
You should not leave valuable items in your motor caravan. Contents of your motor caravan are NOT
covered whilst outside the motor caravan. A good household policy can cover personal possessions
whilst outside your home and motor caravan (but not whilst left in a motor vehicle). Please
contact Campton who can recommend a good household insurance policy. Campton recommend that you fit a
Thatcham Category 1 alarm/immobiliser to your motor caravan to deter thief’s from stealing your
vehicle and/or its contents.
Fire
Obviously report a fire to the Emergency Services immediately, then inform your insurers. The
vehicle will be towed to an Approved Repairer for assessment/storage and the insurers will offer a
total loss settlement figure in due course. There will be a period when you don’t have a vehicle, but
you do have the option to purchase an immediate replacement (subject to having the resources to do so!)
Campton recommend that you have your gas and electrics checked over once a year by a qualified
technician.
Uninsured Loss Recovery
Hire Motor Caravans – This is a sticky one! Following an accident caused by a negligent Third Party
you should be able to recover the cost of hiring a similar vehicle for the duration of your repairs
from the other party’s insurer (provided they are insured!) However hiring a motor caravan is
expensive and you would have to justify the expense of hiring such a vehicle especially if you only
needed it to go to the shops twice a week! Sometimes you can arrange credit-hire with your ULR
agents (such as OnClaims) who will recover the cost directly from the other party’s insurer. This
decision is made by the ULR agent. Other uninsured losses can include loss of earnings or transport
costs but the biggest one on everyone’s lips these days is personal injury losses. If you are
injured in an accident OnClaims will immediately instruct solicitors do deal with your claim against
the negligent party.
